As anyone who has followed my writing knows, I’m a tv junkie. And I love Gordon Ramsey. But I had to scratch my head when Fox announced a new show featuring the temperamental genius.

MasterChef is being billed as the American Idol of cooking. In other words, it is a competition-style show to find, as Fox television describes it, “America’s greatest amateur chef,” (with Ramsey, no doubt, in the Simon Cowell role). Do we need to find America’s best amateur chef, I ask you? Cooking isn’t like American Idol where vocalists with pipes of gold and little more training then high school music lessons can hold their own beside Smokey Robinson. The winner of MasterChef won’t posses the ability to run the kitchen at Spago for Wolfgang Puck.

But who knows, maybe like Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, MasterChef will offer a 10 city food tour with the top 10 competitors serving up their “signature dishes.”
