Thanksgiving at the LA Mission
Since I am spending time in LA this Thanksgiving with my family I also decided to give back a little this holiday by volunteering to serve a Thanksgiving meal to the homeless through the LA mission. It is a church organization the shelters and feeds thousands of homeless people throughout the year. However for Wednesday’s Thanksgiving meal, people start lining up at 6am for the meal service which doesn’t start until 11am. And…it is worth noting that this is also the place where the celebrities volunteer to give back a little this season. So it was an interesting day.
I went into the LA mission bright and early this morning, donned my assigned navy blue LA Mission apron (all the celebs had a red one), and waited to hear pep talks about the importance of the work I was doing today from the LA police chief, a congressman, and Kirk Douglass. Then, I was sent off with my fellow plate runners to grab a plate, have it filled, and deliver it to the table for someone to eat. There was a separate person to put the turkey, the potatoes, the gravy, the bread etc. on the plate as you walked by and each of these servers was a celebrity. They also took turns being plate servers and one could be standing in line next to Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) or having turkey heaped on your plate by Stephanie Pratt (The Hills) as I did.
I did have two favorite celebrity encounters of the day though. One was seeing Nora Zehetner while she was putting gravy on mashed potatoes. I gushed, “I just loved you in Brick. It’s one of my favorite movies.” She thanked me genuinely with a smile and the next plating round remembered my name. Then there was Gilles Marini. He is one of People magazines sexiest men this year, a Dancing with the Stars Runner up, and you may remember him most as that guy in the shower in the ‘Sex in the City’ movie. He is also very, very charming.
‘Are you ready?,’ he asked.
‘Yes.’ I replied.
“You sure.?’
‘I’m positive.’
‘Ok, close your eyes.’
And I closed my eyes and to open them 2 seconds later as I was instructed Gilles Marini was grinning at my and I now had cranberry sauce, bread, and butter on my plate. I laughed and continued on my way. It’s not even really Thanksgiving yet and I already have a lot to be thankful for…
